Domestic Violence: You Are Not Alone
One in four women in NH have been sexually assaulted and 41% of those assaults are reported under the age of 18. 83% of sexual assaults occur before the age of 25. These statistics are scary. Since starting my practice in family law, I knew that I had to dedicate a portion of my practice to helping those in crisis; particularly those in a domestic violence situation.
What Support Systems Are Out There?
The first step that I took to learning more about domestic violence was to research what support systems were out there for victims. There are 13 domestic violence service agencies in NH that are available 24/7. In the Nashua area, Bridges is a nonprofit organization that provides free and confidential services to victims such as emergency shelter, support groups and education. We have worked with Bridges for years and can say that the advocates there are amazingly supportive and understanding.
How to Legally Protect Yourself
Next, I became familiar with the DOVE Project (Domestic Violence Emergency) in New Hampshire. The DOVE Project is a program that provides victims of domestic violence with emergency legal services. To get a restraining order or order of protection in NH a victim must file a Petition with the local Circuit Court. There are some circumstances that warrant the police requesting an emergency order of protection such as violence that happens when the Court is not open.
Navigating the legal system alone can be extremely difficult and there are resources out there to help. If you, or someone you know is struggling in a violent situation, do not wait to ask for help. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. I have seen so many victims come out on the other side stronger and happier then they ever imagined.
